3D printing has caught the world by storm to the extent that it is suggested that the second industrial revolution is underway. 3D printing or Additive Manufacturing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. It is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes and is unlike traditional techniques, which mostly rely on the removal or subtractive processes of material.

While 3D printing technology has been around since the 1980s, it was not until the early 2010s that the printers became widely available commercially. Since then, there has been a large growth in the sales of these systems and their price has dropped substantially. According to Wohlers Associates, the market for 3D printers and services was worth $2.2 billion worldwide in 2012, up 29% from 2011. McKinsey lists 3D printing as one of the 12 technologies that could drive truly massive economic transformation and disruption in the coming years.

3D printing technology is used for both prototyping and distributed manufacturing with applications in architecture, construction, industrial design, automotive, motorsport, aerospace, military, engineering, dental and medical industries, biotech (human tissue replacement), fashion, footwear, jewellery, eyewear, education, geographic information systems, food, and many other fields.

IMI's Development of Functional Materials for 3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing Course provides an introduction to both 3D printing and additive manufacturing. It reviews all of the recognized techniques used and captures the types of materials that can be used or developed. It provides attendee an understanding and an ability to recognize what is possible in the near term and where the limits of the technologies currently are and to appreciate the breakthroughs that maybe necessary to bring about future predictions. In particular, the course will reveal the advances being made with ink jet and fluid developments.

COURSE LEADERS

Dr. Alan L. Hudd, Director and Founder, Alchemie Technology, Cambridge, UK

Dr. Alan L. Hudd, Alchemie Technology Dr. Hudd is Director and Founder of Alchemie Technology Ltd. Alchemie is an independent contract development and consultancy company to the industrial ink jet industry. Dr. Hudd is also a Director of Inkjet Partnership, a specialized company involved in ink jet conferences, Ink Jet Academy and inkjet training programs. A particular research interest is the development of how ink jet can play a role in providing sustainable energy solutions.

Dr. Hudd was a founder of Xennia Technology and Managing Director from 1996 to 2012. During this period, he built Xennia to become a world leading Ink jet developer and solutions provider to industrial ink jet markets.

In 1987, Dr.Hudd joined Domino Printing Sciences and spent eight years as the Fluids Technology Manager, developing a wide range of ink jet ink for diverse applications and is credited with a number of patents and significant innovations within the industrial ink jet industry. Prior to Domino, he spent almost eight years with the Ministry of Defence and Royal Ordnance in the UK, developing new solid polymer rocket propellants for air to air missiles.

Dr. Hudd graduated with B.Sc. Honours degree in Chemistry and Physics, M.Sc and Ph.D research degrees in Polymer Chemistry from Manchester University.

Hannah O'Brien, Independent Consultant, Cambridge, UK

Hannah O'Brien, Independent Consultant Ms. O'Brien has nearly a decade of experience in the industrial inkjet and additive manufacturing sectors, most recently as Sales Director at Xennia Technology Ltd, a UK based industrial inkjet integrator. She currently provides industry consultancy and market development support to technical companies interested in developing growth through the adoption of sustainable additive manufacturing processes.
